Migration paths for IT professionals into Australia

I think this is the best time to talk about migrating into Australia. Due to the pandemic, Australia closed its borders and limited issuing visa for foreign nationals. Even though this decision helped the country to control Covid, it hit hard all the industries including IT. At the moment this blog is being written, there is a huge demand for IT professionals.

The government is planning to relax visa procedure for a selected set of skills. If you are looking forward to migrate into Australia good time is ahead. Honestly, current moment is also far better than the situation compared to two years back. Here I will list down some visa options you can consider to become a permanent resident(PR) in Australia. Some processes requires harder effort than the others and please note that these are not the only available paths. Also I do not suppose to discuss PR visas(189/190) in this post. Please comment down, if you would need a separate post on them.

186 - Employer Nomination Scheme

This visa helps you if you are already a skilled worker. Imagine you are a very rare resource, then start your job search today. Contact recruiters via LinkedIn or Seek and express your willingness to move to Australia. There are companies who would like to nominate good candidates and make PR arrangements for them. If you get this Visa, your company would provide you a separate migration package which typically includes your air tickets and 3 months of accommodation cost.

482 - Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

482 Visa is one of the most popular streams these days. Most of the companies are looking for better candidates around the globe. If you could crack the interview, your employer will takes care of rest and will arrange the visa for you. With this visa you can work in Australia up to 4 years. Most of the time the processing time of this visa is minimum and will process within 6 months. This is a good opportunity for you to step into Australia, after these 4 years you can decide whether you are ready to apply your PR independently or ask help your employer with above 186 visa.

500 - Student Visa

You might be wondering how student visa lets you receive PR in Australia. But this is the most common path way to PR. You can apply for Australian institutes for your higher studies; bachelors, masters or doctoral degrees. If you perform a careful research on university websites, you can find scholarship that could be applied for. It is unlikely to have a scholarship for a bachelors degree but don't give up. If you are lucky you would find one. There are available scholarships for masters and doctoral degrees. You would find full scholarships for master degrees where you can follow your course for free. For doctoral degrees, some universities provide two scholarships. If you are granted both scholarships you can learn for free and they will cover your day to day expenses as well.

By the way, how you get PR with this visa. 500 Student Visa is a good option to complete your qualifications and collect more points if you apply for a points based PR visa. In addition, once you complete your degree, you can apply for Temporary Graduate Visa which will allow you to stay and work in Australia up to 4 years. During this time, you can gain some experience and qualify as a skilled worker. Then you have quite a few options. You can apply for 189 or 190 Visas on your own. Or you can get 186 or 482 Visas from your employer.

476 - Skilled-Recognised Graduate Visa

This visa is for you if you completed your Engineering degree in last 2 years. Then you are eligible for 476 Visa which will allow you to work and study for 18 months in Australia. You may be wondering whether 18 months would be enough to get PR given that you don't have much experience as well. That is when above mentioned visa comes into play. During your 18 months you can show your employer how good you are and most of the time you will get a sponsorship for your visa. Also you will be aware of other(not mentioned here) PR paths.
